As 2011 draws to a close, the St. Barnabas Community Garden Committee would like to thank all of our gardeners for their hard work, and to celebrate the wonderful harvest we had this year. Pancakes, Anyone?

St. Barnabas Anglican Church is inviting all gardeners to their Annual Stampede Breakfast on Sunday, July 10th. There will be fabulous pancakes and sausages and a special reading by Cowboy Poet Doris Daley. Breakfast will be around11:30 AM. Why not come out and have something to eat before or after you check on your garden plot?

Build Day – Mission Accomplished!

All the ingredients were in place. A sunny day, enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers, and piles of newspaper, mulch and soil. Everyone worked hard and we got the site prepared, all the beds built and filled with materials. I think the best thing about the day was the laughing and conversation that kept everyone going. It was an awesome day. At the end of it, we were all amazed at how much a group of dedicated people can do.

There are a couple of special “thank-you”s that need to be sent out:

To our friends and family who came out to help with the build. We couldn’t have done it without you.

To Wild Rose Brewery for providing spent hops & grain to enrich our garden beds,

To Metro News Calgary and Central Web Calgary for donating newspaper for our beds and pathways,

To the University of Calgary for donating cardboard and other materials.

and Lastly, to Paul Hughes for dropping by at the end of the day to encourage us.

Updated Garden Plan

Here is an updated copy of the garden plan. You can see that all the beds have been given numbers, and that beds 13, 14 and 15 have been moved slightly. We will be emailing our garden members to let you know what bed you have been assigned to. You can also find out your bed by coming to the Build Day on Saturday, May 21st.

Organic Seed Sources

At our meeting last night, St. Barnabas community garden members decided that we would use only non GMO (genetically modified) plants and seeds in our garden. There are a number of good sources for non GMO seeds. Here is a short list, but please post any that you particularly like or recommend!

Our first community garden meeting was yesterday night at St. Barnabas Anglican Church. We had a great turn-out with a lot of our gardeners coming out to discuss the garden’s rules and start the process of assigning plots. We will be posting minutes from the meeting on the website so members who missed the meeting can catch up on the important news. We will also post our garden rules, with all the changes that we agreed to. It was a great start to an awesome project, Thank you everyone!

Veggie Growing Basics!

The Calgary Horticultural Society is hosting a talk by CBC radio gardening guru Donna Balzer on May 1st, 2011 at the Unitarian Church of Calgary. It’s called No Guff Vegetable Growing and it promises to have some great info on growing veggies. So, for all of you veggie beginners out there, or for those of you who are veggie veterans, but want some new ideas, check out this cool event! All proceeds go to support the Calgary Horticultural Society.
