2024 Garden Year Kick-Off!

Hello St Barnabas Community Gardeners,

We hope everyone has had a good winter and is looking forward to the upcoming gardening season. The Committee has set the calendar for the upcoming year and reviewed our notes for the changes that have been suggested at the wrap up meeting.

The preliminary calendar is found on our website – https://stbarnabasgarden.org/. Our first meeting of the year will be Saturday March 23, at 10:00am. The plan is that we will do this at the Church undercroft. We understand this is short notice, much like the changes in the weather!  The good news is you can get two garden things done in one day – stop by St Barnabas at 10, and then head over to Seedy Saturday!  It is happening the same day, from 10am to 3pm at Bowness Community Association (7904 43 Ave NW, Calgary AB T3B 4P9).

We are not very demanding, but for this meeting, please remember that attendance is mandatory, either by yourself or a delegate. This meeting allows us to confirm plot assignments and communicate essential information about how we run the garden. If you absolutely cannot attend, and cannot delegate to someone else who can attend, please let us know, and complete the documents and payments electronically.

Assuming everyone is returning, we will have one vacant plot, and will start looking for someone to take that on.  On that note, if things have changed, and you are not returning, we need to know that too!  If you know someone who is interested in a garden plot, we do not currently have a waitlist.  People can email stbarnabasgarden@gmail.com, and we will keep track first-come first-served.

The kick off meeting allows us to discuss any updates to rules and policies for the year. Everyone is predicting a drought this year; we may wish to discuss additional approaches we can take as a garden.  And of course, the meeting is a chance to reconnect with your fellow gardeners, who hopefully you will be seeing around the garden throughout the year.

Please review the rules, which, besides the dates, reinforce the ‘community’ aspect of the Garden. We do need your commitment to attending your share of the group workdays, and to the upkeep of common areas between workdays. The dates for planting and clean out are the same as last year; we want to make sure that plots are used and kept tidy.

After the registration day, the first big event for the year is the workday on Saturday April 20th. It worked last year, so we have it in the afternoon, at 1pm, when things warm up enough to be productive. If the weather is truly uncooperative, the workday would be deferred to April 27th.

We have spread out the other workdays the same as previous years, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. “Bring a Chair” remained popular last year –you are invited to bring a chair and we can linger, have a beverage, and get to know one another.
