2016 Registration – March 19th at 1:00pm

Good Day
Please mark March 19 at 1:00 pm in your calendar for the kick-off meeting for gardeners for 2016. The meeting will be held in St. Barnabas undercroft and gardeners are asked to attend or send a proxy to complete bed registration formalities.
I will be sending out registration materials later this week, and it will be helpful if you would print them, complete them and bring them with you together with cash or a cheque for the annual bed rental fee ($20 for a half and $40 for a full bed).
“Seedy Saturday” will be held the same day at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside community centre from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, so you can look for seeds to plant on your way to St Barnabas!

2015 Season

Garden registration for the 2015 season will be held on Saturday, March 21, from 13:00-15:00 in the undercroft of St Barnabas Church. “Seedy Saturday” is also on at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre from 10:00-15:00 the same day.
Returning gardeners or their proxies must register and pay bed rentals fees at this meeting. Rentals are the same as last year ($20 for a half bed, and $40 for a full bed). So far, I know of no one who is leaving the garden, but if anyone intends to, please let the committee know as we have a waiting list.
The calendar of garden work days for 2015 has been sent out, and will be posted on our site. It’s similar to last year’s, and Wednesday weeding days coincide with “special” markets at HSCA.
See you all March 21!

April 26th Workday

Well, it has been an inauspicious start to our gardening year.  Here’s hoping the workday on the 26th will see lots of sunshine and as many gardeners as possible.  We were originally scheduled for only 9:00am until noon, but with workload from the 12th’s workday, there will be much to do.

The list of tasks the Committee hopes to accomplish includes:

  • Remove all newly delivered mulch from the boulevard, and distribute evenly to the gardens
  • Move the garden banner two panels to the east, put up second banner from the shed, facing south next to the compost heap
  • Refresh bed numbers with felt-tipped marker
  • Weed mulched areas and communal beds (along south fence, herb, asparagus and perennial beds), pick up litter (garbage bags in tool shed)
  • Preparation for mulching along west fence of garden
    • dig up dandelions
    • install edging along base of fence, leaving 2-3 inches exposed to retain mulch

We will endeavor to have access to the Church undercroft, and will provide some sandwiches.  Please come prepared with clothing appropriate for the weather and the work.  Any tools that you can bring along for the tasks above will be put to good use.  Especially helpful will be shovels for digging the compost, and wheelbarrows to move it.

Also, as of this writing, there are still two beds available this year.  They are available first-come first-served by emailing stbarnabasgarden@gmail.com.
